Why Pittsburgh?

Why does everyone love Pittsburgh? I have never found a city that so many people seem to radiate to. And you can’t argue cities such as New York and Los Angeles, those are just icon cities that everyone likes so that they can sound cooler. You know. Not that they aren’t great cities (Hey, I can be cool too).

I digress. Like I was saying, everyone I have met who has ever visited or lived in Pittsburgh loves it, misses it, and wants to go back to visit, if not move there as soon as possible.

Why is this? When I think of my home (Montgomery, AL), the only reason I would ever visit is to see my family and in the unfortunate event that I had to move back, it would be very much against my will. And I have found that many people share my opinion (maybe not so drastic) about their hometown cities, but not so with Pittsburgh.

So I had to do a bit of research. In this research, I realized that I have much more information to cover than in just one blog post. So I will be posting “Why Pittsurgh?" from time to time.

  1. Pittsburgh is the only city in the US to place in the top 20 of ever edition of the Places Rates Almanac. Only 3 years ago, in 2007, Pittsburgh ranked number one. The Economist ranked Pittsburgh the top most livable city in the US in 2009. Livability is ranked on a number of factors such has price of living, crime rate, cultural opportunities and chance of natural disaster. However the National Lung Association ranked Pittsburgh number three of most polluted cities in 2008. This has been disputed because the air sample was collected downwind of the U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works, the nation's largest Coke plant. So obviously, it isn't going to be a great air sample. All in all, sounds like Pittsburgh is a decent place to live.

That is all I am going to give you for now….gotta keep you wanting more about that glorious city (that I have yet to visit).

But one more fun fact before I go. As far as cities go, Pittsburgh has the second most number of bridges in the world (behind Venice)....I think I am learning more from this than you will!

Till your next Tuesday history lesson (unless something more exciting come up),

p.s. I am very sorry that I did not include any sports related information. Vancouver in T minus 3 days.
